Significant Legal Wins

  • Defended a nationally prominent doctor sued for wrongful death following a hair transplant procedure. Plaintiff submitted a $23 million economic loss report. However, Mr. Katz resolved the matter within the doctor’s $1 million insurance policy before his deposition was taken.
  • Settled at mediation claims involving failed patent prosecutions on behalf of a Wisconsin company in excess of $10,000,000.
  • Obtained reversal on appeal of a TRO and injunction involving the disputed purchase of a condominium in Chicago for a prominent Chicago lawyer and against a Mexican billionaire in excess of $8,600,000.
  • Obtained defense verdict for uninsured lawyer following jury trial on legal malpractice claims involving alleged negligent pension advice. When the case was first filed in 2011, the Plaintiff demanded $5,100,000 to settle.
  • Settled at mediation for $3,750,000 claims against an international law firm for fraud and legal malpractice on behalf of a large wireless carrier for negligently shortening the terms on 26 patents.
  • Brought in as trial counsel and settled after mediation a legal malpractice matter involving a 9/11 widow for an amount in excess of $3,000,000.
  • Obtained judgment in the amount of $2,550,377 for Scottie Pippen against Christian Laettner in action involving failed purchase of professional sports franchise.
  • Settled after party depositions policy limits claim for $2,000,000 on behalf of a man with a rare nerve disorder following a rear-end car collision in the city of Chicago. Case did not even have to go to arbitration.
  • Represented NBA athlete Ben Gordon against former accountant and advisor which resulted in summary judgment in the amount of $1,386,666 for Mr. Gordon. Subsequently obtained summary judgment for Mr. Gordon in defense of action brought by former agent seeking in excess of $1,200,000 for alleged breach of professional services contract.
  • First chaired and obtained voluntary dismissal immediately before the start of trial of a major bank vice president charged with contribution and indemnification in a matter involving legal malpractice.
  • Obtained settlement in the amount of $1,100,000 on behalf of a major Chicago law firm in connection with a departing partner’s alleged theft of a contingent fee matter.
  • First chaired and obtained verdict in a 1983 action in the Central District of Illinois, where I was appointed by the court and met my client for the first time 10 minutes before trial. Prior to that, no discovery had been taken in the case.
  • First chaired and obtained defense verdict in an action alleging significant property damage relating to a semi-truck accident on behalf of a nationally prominent trucking company.
